This is a Variable Edition woodcut print.  Variable edition refers to the fact that a limited number of prints were made, in this case four prints, with the same image as a base but variations on each print.  This creates a unique art piece since no two are identical.  In other words each functions as an original work of art on paper.

In this version of the print in the "...when she breathes..." series I added chine collé to the face, using the colours to create depth and pop the feathers.  Chine collé is a printmaking technique in which material (usually paper or cloth) of a different color or texture is bonded to the underlying print paper by being passed through the press as the piece is printed.  The result is often a print which looks embossed, as in this piece.

This image originated with a photo I took of an elderly woman in Beijing.  She was very surprised and shy when I asked if I could take her picture.  She told me she was "too ugly", but it was the lines and wrinkles of her face that I found so visually important.  The signs of a life lived in the acceptance of transience, suffering and impermanence.  Red feathers represent life force, passion and the courage to move beyond physical and mental barriers.
